The Beginning and Evolution: PAFMAC Story Part 1
The Beginning and Evolution: PAFMAC Story
Nippon
PMAC has manufactured and sold water source heat pump units since its
establishment in 1972, and the company name is a coined term comprising the
initials of “Prefabricated”, “Module”, “Air-conditioner” and “Cassette” (PMAC).
Each of our water source heat pump units are equipped with internal compressors, allowing you to switch between cooling and heating at will per unit all year round, answering your various air-conditioning needs against heat generation from lighting or electronic equipment in a room and the room’s heat load caused by directional orientation.
Also, there has been an increase in integrating our system by various buildings as a preparation for times of oil crisis, or other emergencies when energy conservation is demanded upon our society, due to water heat source’s outstanding operational efficiency and high heat recovery rate when cooling and heating are intermixed in a building.

Each of our water source heat pump units are equipped with internal compressors, allowing you to switch between cooling and heating at will per unit all year round, answering your various air-conditioning needs against heat generation from lighting or electronic equipment in a room and the room’s heat load caused by directional orientation.
Water
source heat unit system requires only cooling tower, boiler and circulation
pump, greatly reducing equipment room space in comparison to other systems in
general, so higher the price of land, higher the merit by using this economical
air conditioning system.
Also, there has been an increase in integrating our system by various buildings as a preparation for times of oil crisis, or other emergencies when energy conservation is demanded upon our society, due to water heat source’s outstanding operational efficiency and high heat recovery rate when cooling and heating are intermixed in a building.
In
recent years, our innovative technology has provided the solution for increased
number of unutilized energy systems that effectively maximizes groundwater or
geothermal heat, and same can also be said of Zero-energy buildings (Zeb)
demanding more and more of our technology.
2. Before PAFMAC
By end of the 1980’s, as a counter measure to
Japan’s chronic power shortage during the summer time, increased number of
buildings applied midnight nuclear power surplus to store chilled and hot water
during late-nights in a form of thermal energy in order to reduce daytime power
consumption.
However, this AC system approach has
limitations. It can only provide cooling when chilled water is stored and
heating when hot water is stored in late-night thermal storage, not having the
option of switching between cooling and heating on an individual unit basis.
In
order to solve this dilemma, we collaborated with electric companies and AC
engineering firm to develop a new product named PFAS, a unit that combines
water source heat pump and fan coil that provides back up support at peak AC
usage times and it innovatively provides heating operation with chilled water
as well as cooling operation with hot water.
This
product became the predecessor to the present PAFMAC. In the initial model, fan
coil function was used for daily operation and when the storage capacity became
empty the heat pump function would be activated. We envisioned the product
application in office buildings, so the fan coil capacity was at #600 and the
heat pump capacity was at 18,000BTU.
